Maths Fraction for grade 3 grade 4


  • A fraction represents  a part of a whole. It is represented by 2 numbers separated by a horizontal line, called a bar.
  • The number above the bar is called the Numerator and the number below the bar is called the Denominator.
  • Fractions with the same denominator are called like fractions.
  • Fractions with different denominator are called unlike fractions.
  • To get fractions equivalent to a given fraction, we multiply or divide its numerator and denominator by the same number.
  • If two fractions have the same denominators, the fraction with greater numerator is greater. Example 5/8 > 3/8
  • If two fractions have same numerator, the fraction with smaller denominator is greater. Example 5/7 >  5/9

Question 1) The denominator of a fraction is thrice that of the numerator.  The sum of the numerator and denominator is 4. Find the fraction.

A) 1/3 
B) 2/5
c) 1/4
D) 3/4

Question 3)  If A = 2/23 , B = 13/23  , C = 5/23 and D = 7/23                                                                                      Find the value of ( B - A ) + ( D - C ).

Question 4 ) Mohit cut the cake in 7 pieces. He gave 3 pieces to his sister and 2 pieces to his brother and eats the rest. What fraction of the cake did Mohit eat ?

A) 4/7
B) 5/7
C) 2/7
D) 3/7

Question 5)  Mrs Vardha cuts a cake into 12 pieces as shown in figure below
What fraction of cake is given to Asha ( marked as A in Figure )
What fraction of cake is given to Sudha ( marked as S in figure )
What fraction of cake is left ?

Question 6 ) Rohan cut a Pizza into a 12 equal pieces . He ate 2 pieces and gave each of his friends twice as many pieces. How many pieces of  pizza were left ?
